Indo/Central Bank - "Ireland’s money pile set to grow further due to ageing demographics"

There are no statistics that match up households with pension funds with households with deposits.

But it wouldn’t surprise me if there are people heading for retirement with five-figure pension funds and six-figure deposit accounts.

The issue is not that some irish people have more money than in other countries, they don't its just that they are not investing it sensibly but are leaving it sitting in deposit accounts. When total irish wealth per capita is measured against other countries we are not as wealthy as French, British and Germans and about equal to spanish people. There seems to be a narrative now that alot of irish people are very wealthy and therefore need to bring in more taxes. Whereas in fact it is the relatively onerous and complicated investment taxes regime in this country that has kept so much money sitting in deposit accounts, in other countries that money is invested and that's the issue.
As for "ageing demographics" that's also an exaggeration as we are alot younger than our european peers and are just moving to similar demographics now as the rest of Europe, its actually normal .

These comparisons are hazardous as they don’t include DC pension funds which are more common in Ireland than the rest of Europe.

Irish households have been on a savings binge for a decade and a half now with household savings (in economic terms) amongst the highest in Europe.

Isnt a lot of this down to interest rates? I mean, you could actually earn interest on savings over the last 4/5 yrs. Not much, but better than the 20/30yr era of constant credit, loans etc that preceded it.
I just think a lot of people are relieved that they can actually point to a pool of cash that is theirs and is not tied to outstanding loans.

Interest rates have peaked, for now, and beginning to fall. The spending/investing will follow.

Deficit of infrastructure in the country, could be financed via a portion of savings & earn a good return over time rather than have so much cash of deposit accounts. There is such an opportunity out there to divert cash into medium to long term domestic infa funds that would show decent 8% to 10% returns per annum when combined with longer term financing from banks active in this space. So much solar going up / needed here to meet targets plus wind. Is it just too much hassle / CB regulation to try to achieve this.
Anyone know of anybody doing this in Ireland and if not , in Europe . Definitely worth part of a diversified portfolio if there is an experienced asset manager in this space, but so many chancers around too ….Blackbee etc…they just have terrible opaque fee structures / people get burned / all over the press / people get nervous & keep cash on deposit !
