If/ when I am liable for pension abatement

I retired with 40 years PS service, pension is 26k which is 50% of final salary. A few months as a retiree took up a temporary role in civil service. Weekly gross is 594 with yearly increments. I have 12 months completed. Don't want to fall into the abatement net. The CS role is full time and being temporary its not eligible for shorter working week which would bring the salary down and under abatement threshold.
 
On the face of it you probably are liable. Did you have to give details of your PS pension when you were being employed in the new temporary role? Your employer should have checked. I think you were also under obligation to inform your pension department.

Just a side note - it is not your salary that could potentially be reduced - it is your pension.

There are some exemptions from abatement, eg, teachers.

My understanding is that it should be abated and you will owe money. Even if you did do the shorter year it would still be abated. It is not as simple as saying that as long as you are not earning more than your final salary you are OK. Check it out before you end up owing too much.
 
I retired early from CS in 2019, and enquired about the census enumerator post in 2022.
I was told at that time that if I were to take up the enumerator post, my pension would stop completely for the weeks I worked.
This may have been because I had retired from Civil Service rather than the wider public service.
(A former HSE colleague worked as an enumerator some years before, and HSE pension wasn't affected at all).

At one point abatement only applied to re-employment within your own area of the Public Service. I think it was in 2012 that it changed to be PS wide.
 
Thats interesting. I gave full details of the PS pension to the new CS dept when I took up the position a year ago.

Then they should have liaised with your pension department:

"The Relevant Employer(s) in which the public service pensioner secures employment should liaise with the Pension Paying Authority of the relevant pension scheme(s) to determine the correct amount of abatement, if any, to apply to the pension"

I suggest checking this with your current employer first.
 
It’s a little off-topic, but some retired civil servant with time on their hands should really try and take this all the way to the Supreme Court for being an assault on their property rights.
