I have come in possession of an old spirit decanter .Stopper is stuck firmly anyone got some suggestions on how to remove same without damaging piece. Thanks

Ask the experts - try a reputable antiques dealer or and see what advice they give. If it wasn't an antique you could try soaking it in water and on possible contraction the stopper might release.

From a web site hints and things
http://www.hintsandthings.co.uk/utilityroom/glassware.htm

Decanter stopper stuck - wrap the next of the decanter in a fairly hot, damp towel and use the handle of a wooden spoon to gently tap opposite sides of the stopper. Or pour two or three drips of cooking oil around the decanter's rim and leave in a warm place.

Not sure about the tapping but would try the cooking oil first.

One other suggestions on the web is to put the decanter in a fridge for 24 hours and then try it.

Good luck

You want to warm the decanter (it expands) and cool the stopper (to make it contract). That in theory will make the stopper smaller than the hole it is in. So, as above, put it all in the fridge and then gently warm the neck. Use the oil as well.
