Hi,

what is the best way to find a financial advisor?

Should I start with the 'Register of Investment Business Firms' on the Central Bank website https: //registers.centralbank.ie/downloadspage.aspx (Newbie so I can't post the link properly!)

Apart from competence and honesty (which no government stamp of approval can guarantee in any case) I'm looking to avoid brokers who will just recommend from a set of products from companies they work with.

Luckily I have around 1m that I can invest. So I need to have someone who can recommend across a wide range of options. I wouldn't rule out property but I thought the idea on some of the threads here of buying companies like Berkshire which are ETF-like in diversity but without the tax implications was very interesting.

I'm open to recommendations from personal experiences of the forum members for advisors in the Limerick or Ennis areas.

But really just the correct list to work from or the qualifications to look out for would be a good start.

Thanks AAM!

It would be worth your while to do a Money Makeover post here on AAM. It will help you collect the information a financial advisor will ask for, it will throw up questions you might want to ask an advisor about or it might just answer your questions without even needing an advisor.

Are you satisfied that you are at the last box on this excellent flowchart and that none of the items in any of the preceeding boxes are relevant to you?

There are no financial advisors (that I know) that don't sell products (and get paid some commissions) from providers they work with. There are those that you can buy advice from, for a fee, but they also set up and service the 'solutions'/products that you're looking for. I don't foresee any financial advisor recommending real residential/commercial property to you in a specific jurisdiction. Putting a geographical limitation on where you get the advice from makes no sense.

If you want a recommendation, I'd contact @Steven Barrett . Have never met that man, or even spoken to him, but he seems like a fit for what you're looking for and you can review his contributions on this forum and you'll see that they are competent and honest. It's not an easy thing to do, to post in your own name on a public forum.

Thanks for your replies.
Anything useful here? Although a lot of the threads seem to be quite old...

I had looked through AAM of course but the 3rd link on that search AAM > General Financial Issues > Investments > Where can I find an Independent Financial Advisor? looks good (if a little old as you say). Thanks.

I may do this but happily right now it's a question of 'just' grow the pot over the next decade at least. Access for college fees and emergencies would be a consideration but mainly just avoid fees.

Very nice chart. Thanks. Pretty sure I have squared away everything else but I'll double check. Valid point re geography but still can be nice to sit opposite someone too.
