How soon after retirement date should pension kick in?

Hi hope someone can tell me is it usual for a HSE pensioner to have to wait 6/8 weeks minimum after retirement before receiving any pension. My uncle is due to return end April and was told, despite his giving nearly 4 months notice, that the pension and lump sum would not kick in immediately? Thanks
