How long does it take to refund a direct debit?

I woke up to a nasty surprise where my account was €50 overdrawn by Vodafone. I called AIB a few minutes later to refund it and they said it would be done but didn't specify when.

When should I expect it back in my account?

You'll have to ask Vodafone - they may not reverse the charge until the next billing cycle and then it may take a few additional days to appear in your account.

DD dispute is a pretty long process, especially if vendor disagree with a dispute.
The bank has to refund the DD to the customer if they have requested it within 8 weeks of it being charged.

It is a separate issue between supplier(e.g. Vodafone) and the customer about any payments that may or may not be due.

Sorry, I misread the first post as implying that Vodafone had agreed to reverse the charge.

Unauthorised transactions (that's what I presume this is) should be refunded by the end of the next working day.
So check your account tomorrow / Thursday.

Yes that is my understanding. Do you have a copy of the Direct Debit mandate you signed with Vodafone? It may well explain what should happen in these circumstances.

If you Google SEPA Direct Debit you should come across the rules which banks, suppliers are to operate within. Most banks have a version of this document on their website which more or less sets out exactly how the system operates and disputed payments are to be handled.
