no central register. If solicitor was deceased's solicitor, then s/he should be able to tell you very quickly if will was made. however, bear in mind that some people use other advisors to make wills, such as accountants.
If the solicitor you are using was not deceased's solicitor, then it could take quite a long time.
If you live in a town, try phoning all solicitors in the town - not practical if in a larger town or city. Also ask relatives if they are aware of will.
