But you could attach some wood to the batten at the top and the wall below if necessary in order to allow you to follow the suggestion above of fitting a new piece of plasterboard to the hold (having first cut it out to a regular rectangular shape presumably)?There is probably 3 inches of space between the timber and the wall so I wouldn't be able to screw anything to it.

I musn't have explained this very well.
I can't do what ye are saying as the vertical pipe you see in the picture will be put back into the hole at the bottom and then the exit will be moved to the top so I can't screw any wood or anything else to the batten as the pipe will be in the way.
I did this recently, I bought a can of expandable foam and liberally
applied it to the hole, when it dried I cut it back with a stanley blade
and finished it off with an electric sander and ready for tiling, if I was
just going to paint it I'd just have given it a skim of polyfiller over the
sanded foam
