How do I plaster large hole?

Hi

I have to raise the waste pipe of a sink so I had to knock a hole in the wall to gain access to it. See attached pic for hole and current setup. I intend to put the pipe back into the wall and take it out again at the top of the hole rather than at the bottom as it is now. I'm left with a large hole in the wall though where the pipe used to exit and all the way up to where it will be exiting now.

How do I close this up and plaster it? It doesn't have to be a really tidy job as I will be tiling over it anyway. Any help would be great.

How about you cut the hole and a piece of plaster board to the same size and then screw the new plasterboard to the timber frame behind. Then you would be able to plaster over it.

There is probably 3 inches of space between the timber and the wall so I wouldn't be able to screw anything to it. The photo is a little misleading. There is only hollow space where the hole is and I can't put anything there. This is my problem.

But you could attach some wood to the batten at the top and the wall below if necessary in order to allow you to follow the suggestion above of fitting a new piece of plasterboard to the hold (having first cut it out to a regular rectangular shape presumably)?

OK

I musn't have explained this very well.

I can't do what ye are saying as the vertical pipe you see in the picture will be put back into the hole at the bottom and then the exit will be moved to the top so I can't screw any wood or anything else to the batten as the pipe will be in the way.

Could you try putting a few pieces of plasterboard behind the existing board - cut a few strips slightly wider than the opening, put them through the hole vertically, rotate 90 degrees so they are horizontal and glue to the back of the existing plasterboard.

Then you can put another strip of plasterboard fixed to these strips or else just skim over them before tiling.

This works in my head - not sure if I'm explaining it properly! :)

I know what you're saying. When I have the pipe put back into the hole, hopefully there will be enough room to put in some plasterboard between the pipe and the inside of the wall. I'll give it a lash and see what happens.

I did this recently, I bought a can of expandable foam and liberally
applied it to the hole, when it dried I cut it back with a stanley blade
and finished it off with an electric sander and ready for tiling, if I was
just going to paint it I'd just have given it a skim of polyfiller over the
sanded foam;)

Sorry - I thought that the job was done and the picture above was what was awaiting repair to the wall.

Sounds like a good idea. Where did you get this can of foam and what was it called?
