Housing developments - how to find out more about them?

Hi all,

How could I find out what/if any new developments were being built in a certain area? Would the council be able to tell me, or would I have to wait until the builder advertised?

Your local authority website should show a list of all planning applications received, decisions made etc. I know I used to check my local (Fingal) one, takes ages as you have to read each section, they were sorted by week and there was a two or 3 week lag. Still nothing in Limerick, despite it being quoted recently - somewhere, don't ask me! - as the fastest-growing urban centre in Ireland (enough with the funny stuff about death rates, OK? ;) )

You still can't even access full details of PP applications already received, on the City/Co. Councils' websites. I e-mailed them a while back to ask why and they replied (eventually!) saying funds didn't permit, etc. More like 'a little knowledge being a dangerous thing', I'd say... :(
