Household Benefits when in Nursing Home

My father has unfortunately had to go into a nursing home this week.

His household benefits will now be stopped (On entry to a Nursing Home/Hospital a client loses entitlement to Household Benefits from the end of the billing period in which they entered the Nursing Home/hospital.)

His house still has to have electricity, gas for heating and home insurance - which will go up. Is there anything that can be done or does he have to pay full price now? The HSE will be taking 80% of his pension.

Is he going into a nursing home temporarily (e.g. for convalescence or whatever) or permanently? I would imagine that a temporary stay in a nursing home would not jeopardise entitlement to HB? If the move is permanent then I don't think that there is anything that can be done here other than to pay for the services separately. I suppose selling or renting are options in this case? On a separate point make sure that the most cost effective utility packages are used to cut costs.

He is going in permanently - selling/renting not an option for a while as we will bring him back to his house while he is still mentally well for an afternoon every so often - he needs to be able to do that to keep his spirits up.

House would not sell now and decor too dated to rent I would think.

Thanks

Tricky situation so - I think you/he have no option but to just pay for these services now but maybe somebody else knows if there is some alternative...
