Just got offered 6 month temp contract with civil service. All good but just prior to being offered i booked holidays that i had been planning for a year. Contract is starting Start of June and hols are for start of Sept. At that stage i will just have 5 days hols worked up. What is the situation this tpye of thing. Am I even entitled to take a day as it is a contract position? I'm up in a heap over it as am delighted with job but now concerned that will lose opportunity to take this trip. I will be away from work 2 weeks and 1 day if i go away!! Please advise asap!!!!

Hi,
What usually happens is that your leave will be calculated for the whole contract period ie 6 months - and you can take your leave at anytime during your contract period. If you leave before the 6 month contract is up and you have overtaken leave, then it is simply stopped out of your final pay. You should have no problems taking the leave as long as it can be rostered in by your supervisor. If you havn't already requested this leave, you should do so asap.

If you are to be employed temporarily as a clerical Officer for six months, you will not be entitled to the amount of leave you will be looking for. Your contract will state the number of days of annual leave you will get. This is based, pro rata, on the annual leave entitlements of Clerical Officer which is 20 days per annum initially.

However by not using any annual leave during your six months and if you have the option to work flexi time, you might (just) make it.

If you let them now now at the negotiating stage that you have a committment to holidays then they should be understanding. It has happened to me in the past where I was 1 week in a job and then gone for 2.
