I've just handed in my notice at work.Could not continue working there any longer. Serious pressure and absolutely no respect for employees at all.I am on a doctors cert at the moment for depression but i did hand in my notice before I got the cert. I knew my employer would not entertain that and I don't get paid for being off sick even if he did. (thats something for another thread). I'm starting a new job late in January and am wondering what to do regarding social welfare entitlements in the meantime. I have been working since october 2005. I was in college before that so I don't think I can get my stamps. If I try to claim disability will it be denied because i handed in my notice? Any other suggestions?

You should contact your SW office and see about signing on - they will assess your claim. If you don't qualify for PRSI linked Unemployment Benefit then you may qualify for means tested Unemployment Assistance. You should also inquire about Disability Benefit/Allowance in case it applies in the case of your certified illness. Basically ask them what your entitlements are, if any. You could also contact your local Citizens Information Centre for info on this stuff. It is quite possible that you are entitled to nothing but you need to go and ask.

Try applying for Illness Benefit. Go to your doctor and fill in the form (MC1). It's usually called the First Cert. After this get an intermediate cert from your doctor for every week that you're ill until you resume work when you should get a final cert. It shouldn't matter that you have handed in your notice as you don't have to working to get this payment.

There may be a problem with the number of contributions required for the relevant tax year (2004). You say you were in College. Get a letter from the college stating the dates you were there as you may get student or pre-entry credits that will help you to qualify.

Hope this helps
