Grants for Water Softeners?

I live in an extremely hard water area.

Everything in the house is getting destroyed by lime scale. I have had to replace the water tank in the hot press. The shower heads/taps etc would be totally destroyed only for the hard elbow grease that is put in to maintaining them. My heating bills were very large last winter - nearly double for two of the months and I feel this is from the inefficiency of the pipes which I suspect are internally caked with lime scale.

I am in the process of organising to get a water softener installed so as to save what is left of the heating/showers/washing machine etc.

Does anyone know if there is any sort of grant available for this as I see it as a necessity.

As far as I know there are no grants available for the installation of water softeners.

Does your water come from a private well, a private source group scheme or does it come from a local authority reservoir / water main?

Some private source group schemes (and some LA's) provide water softening at source.

No matter what the source you should get your water tested at a reputable laboratory before embarking on any type of water treatment.

And take care to deal with reputable well established water treatment contractors with a track record in your area.
 
I dont think so OP. Unfortunatly I have never come acoss such.

A tip for your shower head is to soak it in vinegar btw. Twist it off the hose and soak it in a jug of white vinegar overnight, quite regularly.

Have you tired this. It didn't work for me.
 
I do it after every shower, and it works perfectly for me.

Do you take off and immerse the whole shower head in vinegar? Funny it doesn't work. The guy who installed the shower told me about it, because I live in a very hard water area.
 
With mine also, I use a Pyrex jug, and you can actually see the limescale deposits at the bottom of the jug over time.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions. I haven't tried the vinegar trick but will tomorrow. I have also heard of running cold water through but keep forgetting to do it.
I am once and for all going to get a water softener. My neighbour has one for a few years without hassle and is passing on details of guy she used.
I have already had to replace the water tank in the hot press so think the expense will be worth it.

If your kettle is big enough put the shower head in it & descale both at same time,you can get pretty strong descalers in supermarkets now
 
Descalers work for me even if it also need some attention from a brush. But the vinegar does nothing. Maybe it depends on the vinegar and whats in the limescale? Might vary between areas.
 
I use vinegar. You need to use plenty, but that's not a problem because it is so much cheaper than proprietary descalers.
 
Hi;
As far as I know you can get a grant for water improvments providing the well is over 7 years old.
Information should be availabe in your county council web site, under Water Services. They will need to test your water etc,

No, this is not correct. Grants are only available for individual supplies which are seriously deficient in terms of water quality or quantity. Hardness in water is not considered seriously deficient. In fact many public supplies have very hard water.

Did the OP ever mention whether the water was from a public or private supply?
