Granted Probate: "Inheritance tax has been deferred" What does this mean?

Hi,

A relative has been granted probate after the death of her husband and recieved the documentation last week.

There is a paragraph in the documentation to the effect that the Revenue have stated that inheritance tax has been 'deferred'. What does 'deferred' mean in practical terms? She is worried that she may become liable for some tax in the future.

Since the amounts concerned are relatively small (<30k) she did not use a solicitor and instead got advice on probate from the employee relations officer of her husbands employer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Its a standard disclaimer on the grant. Generally the revenue issue a certificate for the high court to the probate office which allows the probate office to go ahead and issue the grant while the question of any inheritance tax might remain to be dealt with, so the grant would always issue with that disclaimer. It does not mean that there is any inheritance tax payable necessarily. There is nothing to worry about in this particular case since there would be no inheritance tax between husband and wife here.
