If you want the clenliness of electric but the responsiveness of gas then you could get an induction hob.
I've cooked with both gas and electric before and love the way gas responds so quickly. An induction hob will give you the same control. I got one when I built a new house last year and it is the "bees-knees". A little bit more expensive to buy than a standard hob but in my opinion well worth it if you like cooking. Cheaper to run than a standard electric hob as it uses less power.
Only problem is, you may have to replace all your pots and pans as the induction only works with certain types of metal (non ferrous?).
