fitting an ikea sink

Hi

we are hoping to replace kitchen in mil's house with an ikea kitchen. We were wondering if we will have to get adapters to plumb in the sink to existing pipes? Also will ikea cut the hole in the worktop for the sink or where would we go to get this done? Finally how close do we need to have the sink outlet to the original outlet pipe? Thanks for any help
 
My dad fitted my Ikea sink a couple of months ago and it was very easy.

The sink just comes on its own and you buy the waste separately...we bought the Atlant waste and it was extremely simple to use. There are step by step picture instructions for each part. The only change we had to make was that the waste pipe going out through the wall was too high, so we drilled another one lower down in the wall and filled in the old one. Apparently Ikea are designed for kitchens where the pipes are all at skirting board level.

The sink doesn't come with a hole for the tap so you can choose which side to put the draining board. You buy a hole cutter called a Fixya cutter in Ikea to solve this. It consists of a hole cutter and pipe cutter and will take about a minute to cut the hole...not a big hassle.

Oh sorry....I thought you asked about the hole in the actual sink for the tap :eek:

Ikea didn't cut the whole in the worktop...we did it with a jigsaw. You have to be very precise with your measurements and we thought we'd wait until we were ready to fit it in case there were any last minute changes.

AFAIK Ikea make acrylic countertops which have the sink / draining board etc moulded in so there is no cutting necessary. I don't know if they cut normal laminate or wooden worktop, sorry.
 
when you do cut it, brush some pva sealer onto the exposed edges before putting the sink in. Run clear mastic around the outside edge of the underneath of the sink also, some sinks come with a roll of sealer
