Favourite Irish political quote

One of the cleverest things ever said by an Irish politician was Enda Kenny's reply to Brian Cowen's speech dissolving the Dáil on 1st Feb 2011.

Cowen finished his speech ending the Dáil and starting the election campaign with a quote from Raftery

"Anois teacht an earraigh, beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh, ‘s tar éis na féile Bríde, ardóidh mé mo sheol."

Kenny replied by continuing the quote

"Ó chuir mé i mo cheann é ní stopfaidh me choíche, Go seasfaidh mé thíos i lár Chontae Mhaigh Eo."

In effect, you are starting the election, but it will end up in Mayo (with me).
I’ve no idea what that means. Can you translate it into English?

I think it Jackie Healy Rae. The ordinary man eats his dinner in the middle of the day.

I always thought that was FF Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy talking about the plain people of Ireland .... though I stand to be corrected;)

I always remember when the Shinners had two TDs elected and they were interviewed from the studio by Dobbo via satellite link. They spoke to camera with a flat monotone and an open eyed 1000 yard stare, parroting whatever the SF policy was on each topic. They were obviously nervous and totally unused to speaking to camera. It’s was cringe worthy. After the interview Dobbo turned to Charlie McCreevy, who was in studio, and asked him what he “thought of that”. Charlie, without a moment’s hesitation, said “Jasus, they sound like two lovely fellas!”. I thought Dobbo was going to burst as he tried not to laugh.

I'm fairly sure it was JHR. He was responding to a question from an opposition TD, can't remember who but I thought it was very funny at the time. I did a bit of a search online but didn't find anything.

Charlie McCreevy on Bertie Ahern:
He said he knew 25% of the man and that was twenty four percent more than most.

I've also seen it phrased as: He knew about 25pc of what Bertie Ahern was about and added that that was about 24pc more than anybody else.

It’s all just smoke and daggers. You’re upsetting the apple tart.

Think what have I got for Ireland, something which she has wanted these past 700 years, will anyone be satisfied with this bargain, will anyone?

I tell you this, early this morning I have signed my death warrant.

-Michael Collins after signing the treaty.

Not so much a quote but I recall Gerry Adams and Michael McDowell on (I think) Questions and Answers about 20 years ago.

Adams was being questioned about how he could have afforded his house given his employment history. He said he got his money from the bank like everyone else.

“Yes, the Northern Bank” McDowell said without hesitation. There had been a 20 million heist at the Belfast branch some months earlier.

How we laughed.

Padraig flynn about Mary Robinson in 1990

In a snide outburst he said that she had to have new clothes, a new look, a new hairdo and had “the new interest in family, being a mother and all that kind of thing. But none of us who knew Mary Robinson very well in previous incarnations ever heard her claiming to be a great wife and mother”.

A local politician once said from a platform ' if I am elected, I will buy shoes for the footless children ' .

"One more cow, one more sow, one more acre under the plough"

attributed to Patrick hogan minister for agriculture in the 1930s after great depression. In stark contrast to today where the minister is re wetting bogs but also thousands of acres are being taken from agriculture to put under solar farms, very controversial

And we've a massive and totally unsustainable national cattle heard which is causing untold damage to the our waterways and causing us to miss our environmental targets, with the resulting massive fines. Custodians of the environment my backside.

Yeah, the abolition of the quotas paired with a CoOp system that means they must accept all milk supplied by their members even if they already have more than they can sell was a bad move in that regard.
