Extension with planning but no commencement

I'd appreciate any advice please... in advance, hindsight is a great thing & obviously at this stage I wish I had done things differently
I was extending an old cottage & pitching a flat roof (side extension 21sq mtr)
I employed the services of an architect to draw up plans & seek planning permission which was duly granted
Unfortunately it went to tender & architect could not get someone to do the work for me
I hired local builder, older man to do the work but never went back to the architect
I was not aware of BCMS, commencement notice requirements, compliance certification etc.
Perhaps this was naive but I was just guided by people around me who had built prior to these regs.
Any advice as to where I go from here....

There is no retrospective way of getting a valid Commencement Notice.
Are you selling the property? I will also assume you have no Certificates of Compliance with Planning Regulations and Building Regulations?

"but I was just guided by people around me who had built prior to these regs"
Its worth noting, that these regs are not new. They have been in force since 1992 and the requirement to submit a Commencement Notice has always been there.
