ESB Networks "is this a good time?/beat the peak" pilot project

So, I got this by text message yesterday, but that was it.
No follow up or opportunity to send anything back to be in with a chance to get vouchers or whatever.
Pointless stuff as far as I can see.
Flex Event - Turn Down: There will be a flex event today between 5-7pm. Please minimise your electricity usage where possible during this timeframe.

Need inspiration? When using your dishwasher, consider using a delay timer or waiting to use your appliance until after 7pm. If you must run the dishwasher, please use an eco-friendly setting.

Thank you, ESB Networks

So yesterday I received like you a text message confirming that there would be a Flex event yesterday between 5-7.

Today I received the following email giving me the opportunity to confirm if I took part in same. You can click on the link at the 'Tell us what you did' button and then log directly into your ESB Networks account. It will bring you directly to the range of options you can choose from. Can't show them here as I have already confirmed that I did take part.

If you don't want to click on a link presumably when you log in separately to your ESB Networks account will you will have the range of options too.

If you look up the Is this a good time section of the ESB Networks website you will see that they need your MPRN registered and your email.

Not pointless really as over time I have received quite a few vouchers. Some were for €30, €10 or €5 with shops available such as Boots, Dunnes, Primark etc. The voucher system is now run by Prezzee and you can use the App for that.

We invited you to take part in a Turn Down Flexibility Event between 5pm-7pm on Thursday, 17th October. Please take 2 minutes to tell us whether you took action by clicking the button below (you’ll be directed to log into your ESB Networks Online Account).
Please note this survey will close at 12pm on Monday, 21st October 2024.
Making a few simple changes to take control of your electricity usage in your home during energy events can help make a significant collective impact.

We know that it may not be possible to respond to every energy event and that’s okay. But we would appreciate it if you could try your best and let us know how you got on either way.

Thank you for your support,
ESB Networks

So yesterday I received like you a text message confirming that there would be a Flex event yesterday between 5-7.
The the email always follows a day or so after the event. I received one relating to yesterday's event at lunchtime today.

I've had a few of these. Sometimes I get rewards, sometimes I don't. Generally if there is an event I turn off stuff or put on washing or tumble dryer as appropriate. I have smart controls on most plug sockets and even my immersion is remote controlled so I can turn things on or off as needed.

I got three €5 vouchers for October.

With two EVs, a heatpump and a house battery I was taking pretty extreme actions for the flex events, like cutting power to zero for flex-downs by using the house battery or using 10kW+ by charging the car and house battery for flex-ups.

But that made me wonder how much you actually need to do to get the award, because it costs me more money to flex-up on the day rate like that? I know we’re only talking a few Euro here, it’s more of a thought exercise .

Yeah, I suspect there is some formula on their side but I haven't been able to take a guess at it yet.

I got a €10 voucher for October, first one I've received. For the flex-up alerts I've just been setting my solar battery to charge, which I do anyway before the peak rate kicks in so it's not costing me any extra.

email received today on changes to the plan:

We are delighted to see “Is This a Good Time?” go from strength to strength, with over 24,000 customers now signed up to the programme and taking part in energy events - each of you having a tangible impact in helping achieve Ireland’s net zero ambitions.

To amplify our collective impact, we’re making some changes to our energy events and rewards.

Starting from 18th November 2024, we will offer more opportunities to participate in energy events. To ensure the sustainable delivery of “Is This a Good Time?”, the reward for each energy event you participate in will be adjusted to a flat rate of €3 instead of the previous 'up to €5'.

We know that everyone’s lifestyle is different, and you might not always be able to take action when prompted. By planning to increase the scale of events, we hope to ensure that everyone has the chance to contribute and be rewarded, no matter their schedule. This way, we can shift even more electricity together and reward more of you for your efforts.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication. For more details on these changes, please check our FAQs.

Warm regards,
ESB Networks
