Hi All,

I am currently working full time (earning net income of eur2400 p.m). My husband in on Illness Benefit (eur195 p.w). I am due to start maternity leave soon for 6 months (my employer does not top up my salary), and we are going to find it extremely difficult to keep up with our mortgage payments. I have a 2 year old child also.

My question is: Will I be entitled to Mortgage Interest Supplement for the 6 or 7 months I will be on maternity leave? My monthly mortgage is eur980 (of which about eur700 is interest!) I have looked at the forms, but as I am currently still working, I would have to put my monthly income in there, rather than whatever payment I get from Maternity benefit. Would I have to wait until I am actually on maternity benefit to apply?

I would appreciate any advise/info!!!!

Thanks for the reply Brendan! I would still struggle to meet the interest only payment, as that is about eur700 per month. Also, it was mentioned to me that if I take a "break" from the mortgage for a few months, I may lose my tracker rate that I am on!

You can make an application for Mortgage Interest Supplement (MIS) when you stop work and begin your maternity leave - as you'd be in fulltime employment before that time, any application would be refused.

There are several qualifying criteria, so it would be difficult to definitely say that you'd be entitled.

As Brendan said, you would be expected to at least contact your lender to see if any re-scheduling is possible before you make your application for MIS.

This leaflet from the HSE may be useful.
