Drawing circuit diagrams on a freelance basis

Hello all,

I am currently trying to boost my income and I thought of getting myself some CAD software in order to do some freelance work for companies needing circuit diagrams drawn up. Does anyone know if this is a viable idea? Does anyone do this or has anyone tried doing this? I would like to do it in my free time as well as holding down my job. I have no qualifications/experience with CAD but I do know how to use it from my college days and I also work in the electronics industry. I was thinking if I charged reasonable rates then companies would be happy to avail of it whether I have qualifications or not - Perhaps I am wrong!

Any comments/suggestions appreciated.

Wouldn't have thought there's much scope for this in Ireland. Are you talking pcb layouts or normal schematics? How would prospective clients send you the details to be drawn up?

I'm a CAD user myself, Autocad LT and I have to say it's changed an awful lot from college days. I think you'd need a good degree of proficiency in cad to be able to produce drawings efficiently and to make money at it. There are numerous courses out there which give basic training in Autocad.

Thanks for the replies,

Im not actually living in Ireland. I'm in the UK. PCB layout would be the most likely avenue due to my electronics background. As for how the companies getting the details to me I think email would probably be the best way.

PCB layout is pretty much automated these days. First job out of college I worked in a really small business based in a guys house. All PCB layouts there were automatically generated from the schematics and manually tweaked as requred then.

It might be a good idea to pick a few what you would consider potential clients and just phone them up and guage their interest in such a service. If you pick smaller businesses, they will often be very helpfull as they know how difficult it is to get a business up and running.
