Good points, particularly on the enhanced security on credit cards, compared to debit cards, i have noticed, over the years how quickly the credit card company react, and phone or text me, before the fraudilent charge is debited. You need to be careful using debit cards on the internet. If you card details are comprised and there are fraud transactions on your account you are straight away down money. There can be some time delay before its refunded to you. If you use a credit card then when you have fraudulent transactions the transactions will be marked as fraudulent and you won't be liable for them. At the very least you have time to sort it out.
A virtual card (like Revolut provide) or an account with limited funds is another option.
I would have a similar approach as Dee. Using a credit card gives you a line of separation from your bank account. This also means you have up to 7 weeks to pay so you have time to review any transactions and question them if required, so you aren't out of pocket and having to claim anything back. Also, aren't there transaction fees on paying with a debit card which don't exist with credit card payments? You need to be careful using debit cards on the internet. You are required to have a Credit Card for this booking. The main driver must be in possession of a Credit Card in their own name when picking up the car. The Card must have enough available funds to cover the excess / deposit amount (which will be blocked on the Card for the duration of the rental). The Card will also be required to pay for local fees, extra equipment and anything purchased additionally at the car hire counter.
Cash and Debit cards are not accepted.
Accepted Credit Cards
American ExpressMasterCardVisa
Please Note:
This company will not accept prepaid, recharge or virtual credit cards – or any card on which the relevant characters are not raised (‘embossed’).Visa Dankort cards are not accepted. Not all car hire companies accept Chinese UnionPay credit cards. Please check the UnionPay website for details.
Out of interest, what country was that, and did you book directly?I rented a car from Hertz recently and there was really no way round not having a physical credit card from Visa or MasterCard.
But does it? I don't use internet banking on my current account with Ulster Bank. I have a separate credit card with them. I have always liked to have a line of separation between accounts.I would have a similar approach as Dee. Using a credit card gives you a line of separation from your bank account.
You're not alone.I don't have or want to have a Smartphone.
All the banks do this. You are the same person, so they know your accounts are linked. I know within the AIB app I can hide/ remove an account from the app, but the account still exists and is still linked to me.I asked them could I do this but keep my card separate from my current account. They said that this was not possible. Their system will automatically connect them.
Is there a credit card that I can get, that will not link me to another account within the same organisation and will not ask me to download an App?All the banks do this. You are the same person, so they know your accounts are linked. I know within the AIB app I can hide/ remove an account from the app, but the account still exists and is still linked to me.
No, not if you have another account. The bank is required to know that both accounts are you.that will not link me to another account within the same organisation
An App isn't mandatory.will not ask me to download an App?
I know AIB and BOI both allow cash lodgement at their lodgement ATMs (so not just in branch). Also one that I can physically lodge money in to across a counter in a bank and not have to use internet banking?
Our account is a joint account. My wife's credit card is in her sole name. Would they link her sole account to our joint account? No, not if you have another account. The bank is required to know that both accounts are you.
Sorry, I've explained poorly. They eoukd link it to the person, not the account. Our account is a joint account. My wife's credit card is in her sole name. Would they link her sole account to our joint account?
Booking directly with Hertz, debit cards are now accepted.
Yes it's possible, but the block is automatically released back on a debit card much quicker than with a credit card. Can you do this with a debit card?
I didn't realise that, thanks.but the block is automatically released back on a debit card much quicker than with a credit card.
Should be your default position with any car hire!!I was suspicious
Apologies, you're correct. For Hertz Ireland they only allow debit card if you pay for their "Super Cover" excess insurance. I should have read the small print properly. For me I could either pay €80 up front for a no-excess insurance or they put a block for €2,300 to cover damage up to that amount, released when I returned the car undamaged. I went with the latter.
This is on purpose I guess.they only allow debit card if you pay for their "Super Cover" excess insurance.
