Key Post Do I need to have a credit card?

You need to be careful using debit cards on the internet. If you card details are comprised and there are fraud transactions on your account you are straight away down money. There can be some time delay before its refunded to you. If you use a credit card then when you have fraudulent transactions the transactions will be marked as fraudulent and you won't be liable for them. At the very least you have time to sort it out.

A virtual card (like Revolut provide) or an account with limited funds is another option.
Good points, particularly on the enhanced security on credit cards, compared to debit cards, i have noticed, over the years how quickly the credit card company react, and phone or text me, before the fraudilent charge is debited.

I use my credit card to instantly top up Revolut, always do this if making a non Euro payment on Revolut, as exchange rates are far better.

I just use a prepaid 3 money card. I top it up probably every three months. 3 euro a month goes to three. I use it mainly to rent films but sometimes to buy the odd thing.

I would have a similar approach as Dee. Using a credit card gives you a line of separation from your bank account. This also means you have up to 7 weeks to pay so you have time to review any transactions and question them if required, so you aren't out of pocket and having to claim anything back. Also, aren't there transaction fees on paying with a debit card which don't exist with credit card payments?
Personally I find paying €30 annually to be well worth paying for the line of defence, additional funding if required and the time delay before having to pay it off . I find I rarely use my debit card these days, all online payments are through my credit card.

I rented a car from Hertz recently and there was really no way round not having a physical credit card from Visa or MasterCard.

These were the terms.

You are required to have a Credit Card for this booking. The main driver must be in possession of a Credit Card in their own name when picking up the car. The Card must have enough available funds to cover the excess / deposit amount (which will be blocked on the Card for the duration of the rental). The Card will also be required to pay for local fees, extra equipment and anything purchased additionally at the car hire counter.
Cash and Debit cards are not accepted.

But does it? I don't use internet banking on my current account with Ulster Bank. I have a separate credit card with them. I have always liked to have a line of separation between accounts.

I recently got a letter saying that in order for my credit card to continue in use after mid January next I must download their App so that they can contact me this way, to double secure online purchases.

I asked them could I do this but keep my card separate from my current account. They said that this was not possible. Their system will automatically connect them.

On another thread some people have said that they have a credit card with Ulster Bank and no current account and they can use their credit card App. However it appears that if you already have a current account they will automatically connect when you download their APP.

I keep large balances in my current account, the bank of Mom & Dad may be needed shortly. (yes, I know about the taxation clampdown). I don't want both accounts connected.

Also,

I have recently opened an AIB current account and I am in the process of transferring DD's and other payments across. (proving more difficult than I thought), I have not yet thought about an AIB credit card.

Question. Must I have an AIB App to use an AIB credit card when making online purchase........Under the new Payment Services Directive, the new Strong Customer Authentication ("SCA") will mean that customers may be contacted to verify online purchases. Do AIB do this through an App?

I don't have or want to have a Smartphone.

I have AIB debit and credit card. They use the app to confirm certain online transactions. I'm not sure if it is dependent on value of transaction or is more random in nature.

You're not alone.

I haven't used AIB credit card but they have accommodated those without smart phones.

All the banks do this. You are the same person, so they know your accounts are linked. I know within the AIB app I can hide/ remove an account from the app, but the account still exists and is still linked to me.

Is there a credit card that I can get, that will not link me to another account within the same organisation and will not ask me to download an App?

Also one that I can physically lodge money in to across a counter in a bank and not have to use internet banking?

No, not if you have another account. The bank is required to know that both accounts are you.
You can have a standalone credit card without having a current account with the same bank.

An App isn't mandatory.

I know AIB and BOI both allow cash lodgement at their lodgement ATMs (so not just in branch).

No, not if you have another account. The bank is required to know that both accounts are you.
Our account is a joint account. My wife's credit card is in her sole name. Would they link her sole account to our joint account?

Sorry, I've explained poorly. They eoukd link it to the person, not the account.
So they would link both accounts to your wife. And just the joint account to you.

Booking directly with Hertz, debit cards are now accepted.

For me I could either pay €80 up front for a no-excess insurance or they put a block for €2,300 to cover damage up to that amount, released when I returned the car undamaged. I went with the latter.

Can you do this with a debit card?

Apologies, you're correct. For Hertz Ireland they only allow debit card if you pay for their "Super Cover" excess insurance. I should have read the small print properly.

Their policy seems to vary by country.
