Did anyone ever do a patent

Patents are vitally important to any business. I recommend you hire good legal help. Do some research on start-ups who messed up some of their patenting to see the ensuing nightmares (see Dyson).

A system I designed was registered as a patent years ago as a tax avoidance strategy. I was registered as the inventor, but not the beneficiary unfortunately. The patent was registed via a patent agent. My main memory is that the description of the system for the purpose of the patent was intelligible to the inventor.

i was looking http://www.patentsoffice.ie/en/homepage.aspx . iwas just looking into patents and i was wondering how much it was . then i looked at the cost . here is the cost list. http://www.patentsoffice.ie/en/patents_schedule.aspx can anyone make heads or tails of it or does anyone have any experience in this field

Patents are a very specialised area, so much so that there are only a few patents attourney practices in Ireland. If you have a good idea that you need a patent for contact one of these practices:

http://www.aptma.ie/firms.htm and make sure you keep the idea to yourself;)

Hi Folks
I have an idea that Id like to patent. Is the first step to hit the patents office and lodge the patent or to contact a patent attorney?

The idea has been in the back of my mind however id just be interested to know what I would need to do to bring it to the next step.

Contact any of the patent attorneys in my link above first. They'll tell you if your idea requires a patent or not and if it is they'll do the necessary work to patent it in Ireland, Europe etc. All I can say is do not discuss your idea with anyone else before you speak to a patent agent.

If you can sell the product or service in an international market contact Enterprise Ireland or your local enterprise board as they have expertise and funds available to help with the registration.

I had an idea a few months ago and it required a patent. I checked it out and the costs were excessive to say the least. I did a bit of research and filed the patent myself at a cost of €80. They will accept any application and any drawings dont have to be specialised. Best thing is to print off a similar application and copy the format.

However my idea was fairly simple and did not require much specialist help.

Hey
'Best thing is to print off a similar application and copy the format'

From where exactly
Thanks

I'm not sure you can patent an idea. i think you can only patent an implemenation of an idea , basically some sort of gizmo.

I could be wrong.

Did you mean unintelligible to the inventor? I've witnessed a few patent applications and they were not intelligible, even to one "skilled in the art".

Yes, but you don't have to actually build the gizmo. This is the dodge used to patent software or processes, embodied in a machine. Of course, just because a patent is granted doesn't necessarily mean the patent is valid.

PS am I the only who misread the title and thought this was a question about medical ethics?

Sorry - Yes, I meant to say it was untelligible to me. I hardly recognised the system I had lived & breathed for the past 2 years.
