correct size for curtain pole

what is the correct size of a curtain pole for a 3.5 foot window. i bought a 4ft one on the chance it would be ok but it will be too short.. whats the next size up you can get

If it's wooden ones you're on about, you can always get a 5' one and cut it to size.

I use the ones that come in two pieces that slide into each other so you can make them very long or very short - got them in B&Q (they have them in a good few places).

I think you're supposed to leave 6" either side of the window so you can draw the curtains right back and not cut out daylight.
