Claiming tax back on medical expenses

Hi,

I have just registered with PAYE anytime and am hoping to claim back a bit of tax. I have 2 small children, and have plenty of GP's bills from the past few years, which are not covered under our health insurance, I presume I can claim on all these? What about prescription costs?

The 4 of us wear glasses and I wear contacts also. Just wondering if I can claim backs expenses on these? We use the free eye check up with PRSI, & the kids eye check ups are through the public system, and the most cost of their glasses are free, but what about the rest of the cost of the glasses, and our own, can I put those bills in towards tax??

Hi all,

We received a Revenue letter requesting receipts for our 2012 claim.

I rang Revenue to ask if they required the originals and the person didn't know. In the course of the chat I brought up the 'referring doctor letter' for psyio and counselling.
My doctor has only ever given a letter for a consultant or mri/scan/xray.

They honed in on the counselling part and said that wasn't allowable even if sent by GP.
I have just read IT6 for the first time I think and it says the following

"In the case of a psychologist or psychotherapist, relief can only be allowed where the psychologist or psychotherapist is a qualified practitioner as outlined in paragraph What does Practitioner mean? or where a patient is referred by a psychiatrist for a diagnostic procedure" (that doesn't look like it copied properly)
Practitioner means any person who is --a.registered in the register established under section 43 of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007

I was referred by GP to a psychotherapist who is registered with the PSI. I have consulted that body, before seeing the above, as to whether it was an allowable expense and they were less than interested.

Does anyone have a similiar experience please. I don't want to spend weeks arguing the toss with Revenue if there has been a ruling made about it.

If you can go in to the office they are quite good and will help you figure out what can be claimed and what can't.
