chours/ntl bill demanding monies but I believe I don't owe

Hey there, my quesiton: should I pay outstanding monies I owe chours/ntl just because they said they didn't recieve my letter asking them to stop the service? Couldn't I just say I never got the demand letters too? Freaked with them cause the service was so bad that's why I cancelled it.

They did eventually accept other letters from me so service gone by the way side but me gawd, they did well to be paid at all for the service up to then.

Just wondering will I have the debt collectors at the door and end up in court if I don't pay the one outstanding bill?
 
It's about 44 euro...want to be all principled but wouldn't mind knowing the cost of doing that. Might try the consumer crowd and see what they say, I'll post response.
 
Just wondering if this is a tactic used by Chorus/NTL to get an extra payment. Very same thing has happened to my parents - NTL say they never received cancellation letter. They sent second letter cancelling again and refusing to pay bill - they've heard nothing since. I too emailed them in order to cancel digital service, after about two months rang them as I still had the service. Guy on the phone (very rude) said I shouldn't have emailed, I told him that was what requested by NTL, he more or less accused me of lying by saying that no-one in NTL would tell me to do such a thing, I told him this is actually the instruction on the back of the bill. He just muttered and said he would cancel it straight away.
 
Its UPC now. I've tried emailing them in the past and got a reply to ring them they don't respond to emails. Which is pretty staggering for an ISP.

similar situation to yours a few years back. Very frustrating and dispite us emailing in copies of all letters sent by post as back up, they insisted we owed them money.
We explained the situation to the collections company who contacted us on their behalf for 1 months bill. They referred the matter back to NTL and finally we were contacted by a direct contact in NTL. We had to re-explain everything for the umteenth time, they apoliged and it got sorted. The whole thing went on for months, but I refused to just pay it and forget it as they were so appauling.

In our case, NTL send us our regular invoice one month which we paid. Then a few days before the end of the month, we got another final demand invoice for 3cents! where they threatened to cut us off if we didn't pay it. My husband was so furious, he wrote a letter and cellotaped a 5cent coin to it telling them to keep the change. A week later, the feckers cut us off. This was 2 days into the new month and they wanted us to pay for a full month fee even though we had 2 days usage before they cut us off! They told us they would refund us for the unused 28 days of the month, but we had zero confidence in them at that stage as you can image, so refused.

None of this surprises me. They spent years trying to chase me, when I never even signed up to get their services. When I moved in to my place it was already connected, but I don't own a television so asked them to disconnect it. Many letters - some reasonable, some not so, and bills later, they did eventually disconnect it - I thought that was the end of it. But no, more bills - bear in mind, they NEVER had my name as I never signed up for the service. These were addressed to "the resident". It took years for it to be resolved in my case.

I promise the right hand does not know what the left has is up to.
 
Wow that's staggering stuff, as a company they are all over the place. Think I'll keep to my guns, could be a long road, thanks.
 
Me too. When I moved I rang/emailed several times to cancel. When they eventually, months later contacted me, they said they'd cancel the account but I would be liable for the outstanding fees.

I told them plainly that I wouldn't be paying the outdue amounts as I had tried to cancel. They replied that they would pursue me for this. I replied that that was up to them, and I haven't heard back since.
 
I have heard of this happening quite a few times.

They seem to be incapable of opening/reading any correspondence relating to termination of service.

You just did not tell them enough! ;) When I cancelled, I sent them emails to every email address and the two fax numbers I could find for them. They never bothered to send me back the money they owed, all do I did get a statement saying they owed me money. But even that was wrong, as they cut me off a few days before the date on the statement!
