Cheap City Breaks

used to regard Lisbon as a very good value city break, however they have introduced a tourist tax, it was 2 euros per head per night however they have now doubled it to 4 euro per head per night. That is very steep and people will really notice it next year, it only went to 4 euro in september

Ah Joe €4…would you get a glass of Guinness in Dublin for that?

Brendan can let us know when he goes to the stags head for the Xmas drinks.

I have to recommend Spain… been in Valencia, Murcia, Granada, Cartenena, Malaga and Seville…one better than the next.

Food, accommodation and wine..just stay out season

I also like Spain. Have been to San Sebastian, Bilbao, Madrid and Seville, twice, all nice city breaks and yes to off season as it is too hot for me in the summer months..

In fairness, if two people stay three nights, that’s €24 and a bit of a kick in the backside on your way out. You could get a flight for that if you play your cards right.
Exactly, it's a few drinks or coffees alternatively. Also lisbon being good value relatively for other things makes this tourist tax stick out like a sore thumb. Most accommodation doesn't include it in the advertised price, you pay it after booking and on arrival so it can be a bit of a shock. Its been doubled from 2 to 4 euros aswell so probably won't be an issue until next year as most people won't have paid it yet

I stayed in Trieste last September for a few nights and combined it with Ljubljana for a few nights also. It was a great two centre break. Flights to Trieste were not as expensive as some flights to Spain.

Interesting. We're going to Trieste for 4 nights, later in the year. Any recommendations for things to see or places to eat?

Did you go by train from Trieste to Ljubljana and fly back again from Trieste ?

No recommendations. We just stroll and take a chance. Nothing planned. Hopped on a boat from the harbour one day for a trip to Muggia, about a half hour away. That was nice.

No. we got the Flixbus from the bus station in Trieste which was next door to the train station. You need to book in advance as it is a busy route.
Ljubljana a completely different vibe. More laid back. Yes. we flew back from Trieste to Dublin.

We visited Lake Bled from Ljubljana. Disappointing place.....crawling in pick pockets.

We visited Ljubljana at Christmas and Lake Bled having flown to Zagreb.
Ljubljana was lovely. Lake Bled a bit overrated.

I’m typing this from Berlin where I have been for the last four days. Great city and better value than Dublin, though where isn’t these days !
Lots to do and see. Weather has been cold so you need to wrap up this time of year. Was minus 6C on Saturday morning !
Great public transport which is efficient and not too expensive.

Everyone should come once and hear their story. It seems the world has learnt nothing since 1945.

Just booked Wroclaw for 3 nights, weekend, end Feb early Mar. Flights ex Shn, 4 star old town hotel coming in at €400 for 2 people.
Hard to beat that for value IMO.
