Health Insurance Changing my laya policy how much notice do i give?

My laya policy automatically renewed and first payment/direct debit was paid to them in December.
(I didn't notice as renewal email went to spam)
I know that laya allow you to change to a new policy mid term which is great.
My next direct debit to laya is due Monday. I've cancelled it.
If I email laya asking for a new policy effective immediately,
Can laya insist I pay the old policy amount this month?
 
So I contacted laya and they said I must pay this month direct debit before I can change my plan.
There is nothing in terms and conditions about notice periods for change of plan.
I think requiring a full month notice is a bit steep.

Cancelling and switching

In general, health insurance policies are 12-month contracts. All insurers must provide a 14-day cooling-off period from the commencement of the contract, during which time you may cancel and get a full refund. No claims will be paid in respect of these 14 days.

It appears that the only rule here is that health insurance plans are 12 month agreements. Unfortunately other than that it appears it's up to the company in question as what they allow or how flexible they are.
 
I pay my Laya health insurance yearly so not sure about this but are the start date and the first payment date in December one and the same??
If your payment date is after the policy start date then this could be the reason why you have to pay for January before changing the policy
 
Thanks for the responses. I'm waiting for them to get back to me.
One of our kids turned 18 in August. I'm going to cancel her policy anyway. As far as I can see she is not liable for any health levy.
