Carpet – what in gods name should I be looking for in a carpet? I don’t know where to start. Want to put some up the middle of the painted stairs and in some bedrooms. Stairs is quite a distance from the door that will be used all the time so main dirt should be off shoes at that stage…Can anyone advise?

If you want to get a few years wear out of a stairs carpet I would suggest going for at least 80/20 wool/nylon. Inexpensive nylon carpets look okay in showroom but they seem to hold dirt and are very difficult to hoover in my opinion. The wear and tear on a busy stairs means a cheap carpet will not last long and look shabby in no time. If you are getting a carpet runner fitted with metal rods the idea is that a quality fitter can move the carpet later to hide wear and tear. Also then finally colour is very important, I would never go for light coloured carpet. I fitted really good light coloured wool carpet in a bedroom, and it was impossible to keep clean but has withstood wear and tear. My carpet on stairs is a Navan twist carpet 80/20 in a taupe/neutral shade and after 6 years, 3 kids, heavy wear and tear is still in presentable state & clean today, as it vacumes easily with a Dyson.

Hey Killbird
Best place for carpets in my opinion is a furniture store called kilkenny carpets. The owners great - full of advice and won't sell you cheap crap he's very reasonable too. They opened a new furniture store in kk city and it's selling the stuff at more than double the price - for example i got an orthopedic pillow in kilkenny carpets for €10 and it's €90 in meubles the new place. Anyway they deliver to dublin for no extra cost. You should check them out we got our whole place kitted out from there for under €8K and it's all top quality good stuff (semi solid wood flooring - spinapedic matresses etc) [broken link removed]
