Was I imagining things this morning. Worse traffic ever since the schools came back & apparently its car fee day!!
Traffic was a nightmare for all in here this morning coming from all directions.
Aveerage extra time spent this morning in traffic seems to be 30-40mins! Was there something going on today that I missed?

.

Think about it for a minute. What are people meant to do? walk?

Car free day might work if there were viable alternative modes of transport.

Re: .

Yes there was something that you missed! Is was pouring rain. Traffic always comes to a stand still when it is raining in Dublin. Also notice how many traffic lights go out of order when it is raining!! You'd think they'd be used to it by now!

Re: .

This personifies the Irish mentality:

It's a car free day
Therefore no one else will drive their car today
WooHoo
I'll drive my car in today, the roads will be quiet.

Result - everyone drives their car today - the traffic should be light!

Re: .

Maybe if they'd made a bit of an effort. How are we supposed to benefit from free buses between 1 and 6? :rolleyes

Car free Day

Was thinking the same thing myself. Driving to the train station this morning(otherwise looooooooong walk - live kinda in the sticks) and heard on the news that it was car free day. Have to say that was the first I've heard of it - or is that just me????

So I was sitting on a train(got lucky!) that was packed like a sardine tin as it always is and I'm wondering - How can they try and promote car free day if alternative transport a. isn't there, b. is already packed beyond capacity???
Have they supplied park and ride facilities today by the way???? Thinking in particular about Monkstown train station where you have to pay to park - every three hours. Don't know about anyone else:) but I wouldn't be able to make it out of work every three hours to get a train back to the station to pay for parking!!

In fact whatever did happen to the park and ride phenomenon?

Park and Ride exists

D,

Didn't you know we have Park & Ride already ? - You park and the council rides us on parking costs !!

BTW I also had no idea it was car free day today until I was sitting in the car in traffic !!

efm

Re: Park and Ride exists

Like a lot of people if I couldn't bring my car (half way to work) I'd be screwed. There's no fast way to get from Rathfarnham to Sandymount other than by car. So car free day has no meaning to me unfortunately. If I had a cheaper alternative I'd use it.

Car free day

During the last Bus strike when the bus lanes were open to all the traffic around town moved very well..... maybe there should be a "Bus free day"?

Re: Car free day

Matt Cooper had some woman on from the DTO last evening, that was the first I had heard of it, but I reckon the rain was a big factor in screwing the car free element of the day up!

Re: Car free day

There is no Car Free day in operation in Dublin today.

As a token gesture, one section of road in Inchicore is closed off - Traffic is mad because everyone insists on driving to work, parking their car for the day and then driving home again.

No other way of getting from Rathfarnham to Sandymount? A bicycle? Cycle lanes almost the whole way, depending on the route you take.

You have to have a bike and rain gear to make use of them though. I have neither. I leave my house at 7 to be in work for 8. You'll excuse me if I don't want to leave 20 minutes earlier, preferring instead to spend it in bed. I get little enough sleep as it is :)

Re: Car free day

Okay it's a deal. I promise. I expect you to remind me of that though in the future as I might just forget!

Ah come on, Piggy. €150 would get you up & running - I bet you spend that on your car (depreciation, petrol, maintanance, tax) in 2 weeks.

The [broken link removed] reckons you can cycle from Rathfarnham Shopping Centre to Sandymount Green in 40 minutes. So you'll get 20 minutes extra in bed, not 20 minutes less.

You'll have to come up with better excuses than that ;)

Luas

One of my colleagues got the Luas into work this morning and tried to buy a 5 day ticket, to be told there were only 7 day tickets available! There is no combined rail and Luas tickets.

Amazing Stats from Dunphy this morning re:Conjestion charges

The guy from the AA was on Dunphy this morning. He was talking about conjestion charges & explained that when they were brought in in London only 13% of cimmuters used cars to get in London & hence they were necessary as there was little room for improving public transport ( 87% of people used PT).
In Dublin however 72% of people commute to work in their cars.!!! That's a hug amount of people who could used public transport before we'd even have to look at a conjestion charge. My money is still on the Gov taxing cars & continuing its policy of forcing cars off the road rather than gieving people a real alternative.
Did anyone else hear the program this morning? Was I hearing the numbers correct?

Re: Luas

Hi Summer - The standard return ticket is €3.80 (Sandyford to the Green) whereas the 7 day ticket is €16.00. So even if you only use it for 5 days, you are still saving money - and you can use it at the weekends if you like. What's the problem?

I understand the combined smartcard prepaid tickets (bus, rail, DART, LUAS) are in the pipeline for next year sometime. We can't expect everything at once.

Not the car I drive. If it depreciated anymore it'd end in minus figures. Having the engine of a small lawnmower it also does about 500 miles to the thimble-full of petrol. I still haven't replaced it after all my procrastination about getting a new one. It runs okay (for a granny car) but I can't afford luxuries like new cars right now seeing as I'm soon to be a poor home owner! ;)

I suppose I could afford a bike though. I'm not much of a morning person mind you so I just can't see myself getting on a bike at that time. A poor excuse I know.

The DTO journey planner reckons you can cycle from Rathfarnham Shopping Centre to Sandymount Green in 40 minutes. So you'll get 20 minutes extra in bed, not 20 minutes less.

Yeah...but's it's the entire journey from Rathfarnham to Clontarf that takes the hour (Rathfarnham to Sandymount by car [ 7-7:20 ] wait for the dart [ 7:20 - 7:30 ] dart journey [ 7:30-7:45 ] Walk to East Point [ 7:45-8:00 ])...hence I'd need to leave 20 mins earlier to be in Sandymount at the same time.

!

We can't expect everything at once.

Why not? This is a typical socalist response. Under capitalism, we would have everything at once!

(-oh, he's on his lunch break
-but it's three o'clock!
-he'll call you back tomorrow
-but it's already taken me 20 minutes to negotiate your phone system. I need to know why you messed up my tax.
-sorry sir, this is he wrong department... you'll have to fill in form B11 and then wait, and take a ticket
...Months later...
-Sorry sir, can't accept your form B11 because...)
