I recently started work for a company based in Northern Ireland but who have projects in the south although no office in south. I am still living in the south. They are paying me in euro from their euro account and both me and employer are paying tax to Irish revenue. They have now been advised that this is a mistake and I must register in the north and pay tax in the north. Is this true or can we carry on paying tax only in the south?

Ring Revenue and ask to be sure, but this makes sense what they say, technically they need you to be registered in NI as well. I know, probably not favourable for you due to Sterling-Euro rate, but what you can do. Ring Revenue to confirm dude.

Where are you carrying out the work? In the North (UK) or in the Republic, or a mixture?

If you are employed by a UK employer, they are laible to operate UK PAYE on your salary if you are carrying out your duties of employment in the UK.

If you are carrying out your duties of employment in the Republic, they are also obliged to operate Irish PAYE on your salary. This means a double hit for tax, but there are procedures where they may be exempted from operating full UK payroll on you.

This is a complex situation, and it up to them to resolve as you are the employee, but they have the obligation to deduct tax correctly, and sort out the situation, although the position has implications for you personally if the tax is not deducted correctly.

They need to take professional advice from someone who knows the full implications of cross border employment issues. This is an area that I specialise in.

This is what I would have thought too. I know of companies in the North & UK who had to purchase an Irish payroll system in order to calculate and pay taxes properly for emplyees working down here. If your working down here they must calculate your wages and paye / prsi by the Irish system
