Interesting article here about female Hill walkers, they have a support group called Girls on Hills. Not Women on hills or Ladies on hills or Females on Hills.

My mother, a woman who was active in politics and women's rights and has held positions on State Boards, will still refer to a woman in her 40's or 50's working in retail as "the girl in the shop".

But your mother is not a man. She is a female of the species commenting on other females.
