Buying back years of reckonable service

I'm new to this and don't really understand the whole public sector pension scheme very well. My question is can I buy back reckonable years in the public service for a period when I also made private pension contributions?

You can. Check with your HR dept for specific criteria for your job, but the rules in general are here...

Are you in the Single Scheme or one of the older pension schemes (pre-2013)?

There is no Notional Service option in the Single Scheme although there is a facility to purchase additional pension benefits.

These would not be notional years, they would be actual worked eligible years for which i didn't previously contribute to the pension scheme, so not sure if that is allowed if i also contributed to a private pension?

What sort of private pension was it? Did you also have other employment at the time?

Do I take it that you are not in the Single Scheme?

Sorry, it wouldn't let me post for 1 hour as I'm new - I am on the pre 2004 scheme and I was working for the organisation for 2 years but not in their pension scheme. I remember once I joined the pension scheme they said I could not have a private pension anymore - but that seems to have changed now with AVCs etc. hence my question. Had no other employment and it was a bank pension contribution but only a small amount.

Just apply to buy back this service via your HR/Pension department. I don't suspect that there will be any difficulty - other than the potentially quite difficult one of getting the service verified.
