My partner is been moved up the north( fermanagh) for 6 months or so with her job and will be renting accomadation there. She is thinking of buying a car up there, what are the conditions so as to avoid paying VRT and also do Northern garages take cars from the south as a trade in

You should note that as far as i am aware the local authorities salt the roads in poor conditions and this is not great for the underbodies. You would be better importing from England where they grit instead.

The conditions for avoiding VRT are that you must have the car registered in your own name for at least 6 months before your move back. So in your case you should be fine providing your partner is registering for tax etc.. in the North. When you transfere residency back to ROI you can take the car with yourVRT free. You wont be able to sell the car for 12months though. As far as i know the UK and North use the same stuff on the roads in winter.
