Be mindful when you ‘sign up’ for a discount package that you actually get the discount...

I queried the package I was on and term with BGE. They reverted to say that I was on a lower percentage discount than I had signed up. Not sure how one can actually check - but fair play for their honesty

Hi,

Thanks for that advice. Just looking around the market at the moment and seeing that Bord Gais are giving 28% discount on electricity rates. I've checked out Switcher, Bonkers, Choosy and Money Guide Ireland. Other than the problem above how did you find Bord Gais to deal with generally? I find Electric Ireland are excellent and would have to say I hate moving from them but there is too much of a financial difference.

Are there any other hidden conditions in T&Cs that I would need to be aware of before moving maybe two accounts.

Can’t say I’m ax expert. I am only comparing the ‘one big switch’ offer - which appears to give free products - c. 150 euro value and 10 per cent discount for each Gas/ electricity.

So essentially the current ‘dual fuel ‘ Bord Gais offer - would amount to a lot more in monetary value for the average (€1500 annual cost of energy) bill

I switched from Bord Gais this February. I paid a current bill at the time that crossed during the switchover. This left me in credit of c €50. I contacted them by phone looking for a refund. Gave them my bank details.
I made a note of this and I was checking through my bank statements today (two months) and no refund. I think that I should have received a refund by now or has their finance department stalled all refunds?

It's not only the airlines and travel agents that are holding back payments.

Made the switch on-line to Bord Gais recently and so far so good. Got phone call from Electric Ireland offering a €75.00 discount which is really only €25 extra as they offer €50 off generally.

As Electric Ireland have a higher unit rate and 1 year contract with €50 exit fee which Bord Gais don't have it would appear that the Bord Gais 28% off on electricity is I'm hoping the best around at the moment. We'll see how it goes.

Just to add - to anyone that might sign up with the sales agents who knock door to door, check once set up that you are getting the discount you think you are.

Back in December I signed up with Bord Gais with a guy who knocked, I had already done a bit of price checking and was happy to sign up for the advertised gas & bill % discount that I’d seen. I asked the guy was that the % I’d get with him as I hadn’t had a chance to do it online and he said yes. Turns out he had me sign the form and later added different (lower!) discount rates.

I rang to check and they said the door sales agents % discount is always a little less than online only (fair enough) but he deliberately lied to me on this when I asked him directly and if I hadn’t followed up I’d be on the lower discount rates.

The guy I spoke to asked me did I want to make a formal complaint and I said yes - a different team rang me to discuss and told me the guy had been spoken to about it and that was it.

So I’m on the rates that I would have been on if I’d signed up online and what I thought I was getting originally. I’m so happy I checked though, was quite annoyed that the guy fully lied to me though. Reasserts my view to never sign up to anything at the door (even when it’s a totally legit company!)

Exactly, these agents who call to your door don't work directly for the provider, they rely on commission, so many of them will tell you whatever it takes to get you to sign up.

Doesn’t provide much reassurance that it would / could not happen again...

these ‘door to door ‘ type canvassers are exceptional people to do the job and I expect most / all aim to work to the highest standards.

I see ‘Sales Sense’ provides the outsource sales agency support for Bord Gais - so I would have made a direct complaint to them. you would get a more helpful response ...

anyone looking for a future job opportunity
