The Irish Times had a readers offer on Friday for powerful binoculars with 100X magnification. Does anyone know much about binoculars or this offer in particular? They were around 199 euro a pair.
Good value?

IMHO buying from a shop would be handier in case of any problems you would not need to return by post.

I think you can buy second-hand binoculars possibly from race meetings or pawnbrokers but you would probably need a fair bit of knowledge about them. :)

From what I've seen of those Irish Times offers for different items they are priced way above what you would pay by shopping around on the high street or online.

Try the "Camera Exchange".

Same as their "Reader's Travel Offers". Just don't know where they get their prices from.

.

It all depends on what application you have for the binoculars. Depending on whether they're for star gazing, horse racing, bird watching, boating, hill walking etc the high magnification may be good or bad. There are other factors such as field of view, aperture of the lens and different optics issues. You should probably decide what you want the binoculars for and then do a bit of research via google to see what you need.

I've used www.7dayshop.co.uk a few times in the past for photographic equipment, but they also sell [broken link removed]. I see they have a 10x50 waterproof pair for £32.99 — and their p&p is only £1.95...

P.S. michaelm, hope you got my pm earlier...?

This Irish Astronomy Socity do a reasonable pair at a good price, probably not the sme magnification, but worth a look.

I see nobody has tried to explain the way things work, when you have a 10 x 50: it means the magnification is 10 times (first numbers)and the 50 is the amount of light that comes in or the size of the front glass, If you get a 20-50x100 this means magnification is 20 to 50 times, so it can zoom and it will be 100mm in the front. When you say x100 still dont mean its very good but it will be big for binocularas any help?

I managed to get one of the last pairs in Moore Street at about 9.30 on the morning they went on sale. I noticed a chap putting about twenty-five pairs in his trolley. I took that as a good sign; that he knew he could sell them at a decent profit. Either that or he has a lot of twitchers in his social circle. Does Lidl not have a limit on the number of items that they sell to one indiviudal?
