What is the best type garden shed to get? I need a decent size one for storage and just wondering if steel is better than timber.
 
I can recommend Clane sheds. They do a steel shed which has a solid frame floor so it can be put on bricks like a timber shed. They recently delivered and assembled a shed for me in 3 hours and even brought the bricks to mount it on. Ideal if you don't want to put in a concrete footing. No payment requested until after delivery.

Would you think that steel is better to go for than timber .
 
We had one timber and one steel alongside each other for years and the steel one lasted far better and required less maintenance than the timber one. It was left to me to cover the timber one on a regular basis with stuff like Fencelife.

Do steel sheds have an issue with condensation / dampness. ? Air inside heats during the day and at night is cooled when it hits the cold steel thus giving you a lot of droplets / moisture.
 
Really depends on space, budget and what you are using it for.

If it's just tools and usual garden shed stuff, a timber shed will suffice. Low cost, quick installation. Look after it well and it will last decades. A decent one will be about €1,000
Moodys Kildare or someone like sheds direct ( opening a show site on N7 at baldonnel in April)


Steel sheds probably similar, less maintenance, but more expensive. Probably 1500-2000 cost. Clane or steel tech or MCL


Then you have the option of a garden room that can be both for storage and for extra space. You can insulate these, add electricity, etc. Cost 5,000+ gardenhouse24.ie have great choice
 
+1 for sheds direct in Finglas...great buyer experience and good selection of sheds. Avoid wooden sheds, had one and requires annual maintenance which was a nuisance to someone who was time poor.

We actually moved a timber shed to put the steel one in place. It's 20 years old, I was happily surprised that the floor was perfect. However, the roof has been refelted and it's been painted regularly, so not exactly maintenance-free. Much cheaper though.

Dampness can be a problem - in frosty weather in particular. A moisture membrane helps but, depending on usage, extra insulation should be considered. This is Steeltech's offering: https://www.steeltechsheds.ie/materials-information/insulation/
I believe some people DIY their own insulation.

Is planning needed for a garden room or is it considered in the same light as a shed.

up to 25sqm permitted, (subject to it leaving at least 25sqm of open space) but importantly, it cannot be used for sleeping. So ideal for home office, kids playroom, man cave, home gym etc.

Also, if you already have a shed, this counts towards the overall 25sqm unless it was included in original planning

Hence it's good to get on with your neighbours!

But the other thing to be mindful of is if you sell the property. A solicitor will want any sheds/rooms to be compliant.

Btw gardenhouse24.ie have some decent offers. They have economies of scale with manufacturing in Estonia and websites in dozens of countries and my experience of them is excellent.
