In the UK, at least, you can access the Land Registry on line. There is a website called www.mouseprice.com where you can see all of the offical information (for a fee). I found it hugely useful when looking (in London).

It is quite amazing how ingrained the culture of lying is over here. I have used the chain mentioned in the programme before and I was not surprised by anything that I saw the other night. Almost anyone can set up as an estate agent in the UK so quality control is not a concern.
 
A few years ago on AAM there was a link to a database for Dublin where you could view sales prices by specific location - it looked like it was primarily for use by estate agents, not sure if it's still available.
