Average PAYE refund was €900 last year

From a few inquiries I reckon the average cost for a simple single tax submission for a retired husband and wife team is €90.00 through a tax accountant or an accounts technician. That’s a good price and it offers peace of mind for the punter.

But, the process in doing the job yourself for free is simple after you’ve weeded out the revenue online screens that are not needed. Once you’ve sourced your pre filled data the rest is very easy. The whole process shouldn’t take longer than ten minutes.

Little Hint:- Calculate your medical expenses at the end of every month and come the 2nd January you’re ready to finalise your annual tax claim. Don’t delay for your own peace of mind and it’s another mandatory job done.

@Leper, do you mean for a myAccount/"Form 12" or a ROS/"Form 11" return?

@ClubMan , Just in case even a little query could influence somebody looking in here not to complete or delay an annual tax claim, let’s keep the subject simple. But, I am saying that €90.00 is a fair price for a qualified person to complete the annual tax declaration for any retired couple whose earnings are already pre loaded plus inserting the amount of legitimate medical expenses paid during the previous year.

It’s an easy process which shouldn’t take the accountant or accounts technician more than five minutes.

The punter can complete the process for free within ten minutes. A statement from Revenue will be issued online within 24 hours followed up by a letter shortly after.

An accountant or technician isn't going to onboard a client, assemble and write up relevant information from them, access ROS, complete the Form 12, advise the client of their tax position on foot of that, issue a letter or email to that effect, generate and issue an invoice, issue an engagement letter, check the client's anti-money laundering documents, update AML file if needed, arrange the client's signature of the tax return and engagement letter, maintain on file copies of key documents for future reference, and answer any questions the client may have, all in 5 minutes.

Nearly a 100 word sentence up there. I filed my tax info including medical expenses in less time one would take to read that. Its a very easy process. Please don’t make it look difficult, because it isn’t.

I did our tax return 2.5 weeks ago myself., like i always do. Took me 15 mins.

But i havent yet heard bk from Revenue about it. Been chasing on My Enquiries.

Please don’t make it look like you got it all done in 5 minutes because you didn't.

PS Who mentioned difficult?

Of course it's easy.

I only contested @Leper's bizarre claim that an accountant can take on such a case and complete it in 5 minutes.

If you think you need an accountant to do this for you, you're either under a misapprehension or you have some sort of complication in your income or tax affairs.

I think a lot of people do it via Taxback or the likes. Average does seem really high, is this paid out or claimed for the year ie did it include 3 other years I wonder? What is the median?

Be aware that it's the average refund that is €900. It's not that the average result of a tax return is a €900 refund. One person claiming an incapacitated child credit for 4 years would balance out 15 people getting €100 back on health expenses.

More like 140 ppl at 100 per person?

3400 x 4 yrs ÷ 100
