I have a red deal staircase in my new house, but always liking the "showhouse look" of walnut handrail and white spindles I decided to get a "€100 a day" fella in to paint it. Anyway to cut a long story short the finish is fairly shocking - should of expected that i suppose.
So i have decided to call in a local (professional) painting and decorating crowd (who i should add are known to be exceptionally good but on the pricey side) to give me a price for "fixing it" . Obviously they have talked down the whole job saying its incredibly bad etc etc.
They have said that to get it right they will have to completely strip the stairs back to the natural timber. Sand it, prime it, laquer it and then paint it again, with about 5 days work in it for 3 fellas. (The stairs is over two floors) The price for all this is coming in just short of €3000 to include paint and materials. Now they have said that it will last anywhere in the region of 10-15 years.....I just think that the price is very expensive.
I know the timber probably wasn't prepared right first day, but does it really have to be taken back to the natural timber to get it right and am i on my own with the price?
Any comments greatly appreciated.
