Hi,

I am currently working as an accounts technician. I am a part-qualified accountant with ACA. I have been thinking of setting up a side hustle of being a part time bookkeeper in the evenings and weekends.

Has anyone out there done this? If so could you please give me any advice. I have worked in audit for a couple of years and now working in a general role.

Thanks for any advice :)

if i was you i would focus on maximising your career potential as a qualifed accountant than bother with side hustles, what do you want do when you qualify? what kind of role are you in now?

Ideally when I qualify I would like to work as an accountant for a few small companies as a self employed accountant. I work as an accounts technician now, assisting the primary accountant in reconciliations, VAT returns, payroll, etc.
I want to earn some extra money and I was wondering the best way I could do this, with being part-qualified and knowing all the basic skills.

the best way to make money as an accountant (in general terms) is:
Qualify
Get some experience at a large firm (if you arent training at one to begine with), stay there and progress or
Go into industry

Plenty of well paying jobs if you follow that path.

As to what you outlined above i cant help but good luck!

Check if you’re allowed to… you may need a practice certificate and you should certainly look at getting professional indemnity insurance.

Also check your employment contract. Sounds like you’re already doing this work for a salary. There might be a no compete clause in your contract as it does sound like you’ll be potentially taking work from them.

But I’m impressed that you are studying and working full time and still have time and energy to devote to another business

As mentioned above would it not be better to use evenings and week-ends for study time to finish your studies and earn better money that way in the long term. Don't think it would be a good idea to try working during day, finishing your heavy going studies, and doing this part-time work as well.
