Hello AAM, I am currently on VHI hospital plan PMI 4710 (€2,013 euro per year), which up until now was paid by my employer. Due to workplace cut backs, going forward I will pay for health cover from my own pocket.

1. Is there anybody out there familiar with all the various plans from all the various providers, who could suggest any other plan with similar cover and benefits but at lower price?
2. I might instead consider downgrading to a policy for around €1,400 per year. Could anybody please help suggest a good hospital plan for around that price point? [I am 47yo, exercise regularly and currently without any health issues. If faster access to treatments were required instead of waiting any long period on the public system, then I would look to treratment to private / semi private hospitals in and around Dublin].

Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Thank you in advance!

Hi dovetail,

A read of these podcasts might give you some general advice. Some time back Dermot Goode of www.totalhealthcover.ie did mention that €1,500 would be a basic policy and that was probably before the recent price increases on 1st April.

I'm insured with VHI so not familiar with other companies other than what I have read here.

This policy has been recommended on AAM in the past and does appear to be good value Laya Control 600 Connect

A comparison the Health Insurance Authority website between that policy and yours is here If you have a careful read down through that comparison you will see (as discussed on the AAM thread) that there are lot more higher excesses and the day-to-day cover is not as good. Strangely the overall limit on the day-to-day is a lot higher @ €6,500 rather than your present €4,000.

The Laya policy also includes the 100% cover for the ortho and ophth which is unusual.

The Upgrade Rule might be worth a read and to discuss with Laya. Make sure to check out any other changes that might apply.

Don't forget about the allowance on your company policy which can be claimed for 4 years back.

Hi dovetail. I normally do alot of research, however policy renewal is tomorrow as I completely forgot.
The renewal of PMI4510 is €1583. Last year they didn't expect this policy to be around much longer. It covers 75% on consultants and doctors, €100 on glasses every 2 years, and €25 one time on meds. It has 50% off lots of other areas... But falls short on physio as only €25 per time.
I meant to research the new insurance company, but forgot. I may look at Sue Ellen links and then purchase one, but can use the 14 day cool off to go back to PMI 4510, which I have been on for about 4 years.

You can also have up to 13 weeks without any cover before you have to serve waiting periods again.

@ACER10 have that policy too. I cant see where the €25 one time med fees.
And if you change policy can you let me know what one as mine id due in May or June. Thanks.

Thanks. I must submit a script so.

Yea, probably not the best for hospital cover. I didn't need any this year. I had a colonoscopy the year before on a different policy, so 4 hours

ive never had a hospital stay bar that. I've worked in a hospital for over 20 years though.

Edit I'm Becky too. I couldn't remember the password of Becky
