After receiving reply to CF83, how to make bank transfer only for years with 5th April 2025 deadline?

Hi,

I've already received a reply to CF83 (Sep 2024) which details year by year how much I need to pay and shows the deadline for payment for each of those years.

My back payment window starts in 2011, and from there up to 2019 the deadline for payment is 5th April 2025. For my back payment years post 2019, they have rolling payment deadlines from 2026 onwards. All that is as expected.

My question is - from my understanding I need to now do a lump sum payment by bank transfer using the instructions for 'overseas payments'. If I transfer a lump sum that is just enough to cover the amounts with deadline of 5th April 2025, can I be guaranteed that the lump sum payment will be allocated to the years with deadline 5th April 2025 and not to the years with a payment deadline later than 2025?

I've tried calling DWP/HMRC multiple times but always get hung up on eventually after a lot of automated messaging.

Of course I could remove any doubt by just making payment in full now for all the years listed on their reply to my CF83 (2011 to 2024), but it would be more prudent to only pay the years with 5th April 2025 deadline (2011-2019) now, and pay the ones with a later deadline (2020-2024) later.

My understanding is that once you are "in the system" and have been adjucated for back payments as laid out in the letter you would have received, then the 5th April deadline isn't critical to make payments by. However, if you are still worried, I would suggest, if you can find the funds to do so, you make the full payment before then and follow it up with a registered letter to HMRC detailing the payment and what years you wish to have it allocated towards. Apart from anything else that would also resolve the worry of the system changing down the road when you already have your payments totally up to date to present.

If I transfer a lump sum that is just enough to cover the amounts with deadline of 5th April 2025, can I be guaranteed that the lump sum payment will be allocated to the years with deadline 5th April 2025 and not to the years with a payment deadline later than 2025?
What I do is make single payments for each year on different days.

I then write them a letter that says something like “please allocate the payment of 23 March 2025 to the tax year 2015/16” and so forth.

I rang them and they accepted the information re what years I wanted to pay, over the phone. As I had a couple of years I wanted to skip in the middle of years I wanted to pay, I felt it was important to let them know. All worked out well. They are extremely helpful.

I also rang 00441912037010 but accidentally selected the self employed section, got through after about 15 minutes and they transferred me to the right section but at the top of the queue:). Altogether the call took 22 minutes.

I paid my Class 2 contributions to HMRC NIC Receipts GBP 08-32-20 12001004. This worked because I used Revolut UK Account.

I got the info here:

https://www.gov.uk/pay-class-2-national-insurance/make-online-telephone-bank-transfer

and followed the instructions for Paying from a UK Bank Account. I used a Revolut A/C to send sterling, and the sterling account details in the app shows that it's a London based account.

I didn't have an 18-digit reference number so I followed this advice (from the same web page) when adding a reference to the payment:

> If you either live abroad or live in the UK but are paying for a period when you worked abroad,
> you need to use a different reference number.
> Use your National Insurance number followed by ‘IC’, your surname then your initial.
> If your bank limits you to a certain number of characters, you should use your National Insurance
> number followed by ‘IC’ and as much of your surname as possible.
> Example
> If your name is Anne Jones, you’d write the reference as QQ123456AICJONESA

I was then able to call +44 191 203 7010 two days later to assign the payments to exact years by speaking with the operator. I was on hold for 70 minutes but it was simple once I got through.
