Affordable Housing Wait in Cork

Hi,

Wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I got a letter telling me that a decision on my affodable house application for Rathcormac would be made in December then another letter to say january then another that it would be february. I rang earlier this week and they told me at least another three weeks. This seems like a complete shambles and i have my doubts about applying for this scheme i dont know anyone who has been offered one in cork in any development.

It is the county council you are talking about I assume. I am on both lists - ie city and county for the last 3 years and I have found the county to be hopeless. Although the city isnt much better. The county is notoriously slow. A friend of mine got a house from them and even after they told her she got a house it was months before she got the keys. It is worth it if you get offered one you like considering the price. Saying that the city ones seem to be decreasing in size. I dont know about you but I would like somewhere it store things, even a bike!

I've recently applied for affordable housing in Cork City and County , is 3 years the standard waiting time for both schemes do you think?

Or will both the city and the county be bringing more affordable housing on stream over the next few years..

There seems to be plenty of affordable housing in Dublin !!

Yeah, but plenty of people looking for it too, I think there was something like 6000 applications for 300 properties in one of the previous Dublin City Council "lotteries"
 
Hi, I'm on both the City & County waiting lists for the last 2 years. I find so far that that City Council are the easiest and most organised to deal with. AND they always ring you back if you leave a voice-mail on their phone. I've never got a call-back from the County yet.

Do ye know how they assess people - is there a lottery situation that I've read about re Dublin and does it go purely on affordability or do they bring family circumstances into account ie having children.

The reason I ask is I thought the application form for Cork County asked some slightly bizzare questions like what kind of a house do you live in currently , how many bedrooms and how many people living in it , that I was wondering is there a social aspect also to how they allocate affordable housing ...

Am I making sense !?

The City Council goes on a points system...e.g points for each year you are on waitiing list, points for if you are working in the same area (city) that you want the house, points based on savings, lack of loans etc.I'm not certain with the County Council but I'd say it's the same - not a lottery.

I have been on the other end of this with Cork Co Council. I had to go to an enormous amount of trouble to give them section 5 properties. Even after we had forced them to pay us 90% of the money (which took ages) we still had to chase them to pay the rest and take posession.
It is no wonder that they can not give them out if thay are so incapable of taking them in.

If you want i will take one of those affordable houses directly from you and we can cut out the middleman:D

Thanks for that Bubblebunny, from what I'm reading from people on any affordable housing list , I think I'm in for a long wait !
 
Yeah, it certainly isn't an easy to get a house......and not all that affordable most of the time either! :rolleyes:
