Advice re plants for seaside area

Hi,

Living in the West of Ireland and hoping to put some plants in garden for next summer and would like some ideas. The winter is harsh here with wind and wondered what might work best. Would like something green, flowery and height of 3-4ft for along a wall ? Thank you,
 
Obvious as it sounds, take a walk and look at what plants are thriving in your neighbours gardens.

Years ago I lived in a rented house in North Kerry and i don't know how anything in the gardens survived. The wind coming in off the Atlantic bent every plant horizontal!

Also look at what wild plants do well and you could always use these with other plants. eg sea pinks

Would second escallonia for hedging or for a large flowering shrub ( as long as you keep the beast trimmed). Also New Zealand Flax ( phormiums), different types of grasses especially pampas grass, cordelines, hebes, fuschia. Surprisingly ( at least to me) carnations also very good. But most of all, if you have a very exposed garden, the first step is to plant a large hedge, and wait a few years until it grows, then plant the rest ( this will save you money, frustration and work).

As a good general guide, silver or grey leafed plants do well by the sea and in full sun: e.g: lavenders, cardoons, sage, santolina etc.

Other things that do well are: fuchsia; escallonia; hydrangeas; mallows; osteospermums; yuccas; cistus (rockrose); Buddleia; crocosmia (the variety "lucifer" is stunning).

If you have acid soil then you can't do wrong with Rhododendrons either
