Is it possible for a single executor of an estate to select a 2nd executor to share the workoad?

Assuming the person who made the will is now deceased, the answer is no.

But as an executor you can ask family members or friends to help out with the donkey work; and/or you can employ a Solicitor, tax agent, letting agent or other professionals in connection with winding up the estate.
 
As I read that they answer would be no...,however...., if the single executor and those who are the beneficiaries are in agreement then who is to object. Just remember that the executor is the main person responsible.
 
Being an executor is a legally appointed role; you can't just name another person as an executor.
