So that performance doesn't rock your boat Wicklowman; is it the subject matter? Probably wouldn't greatly rock mine either, but I wouldn't label it "rubbish"or write-off the entire fundit idea.

One person's rubbish is anothers gem. Art often can be a kind of "enstrangement" where the world is seen from a completely odd yet truth-revealing perspective. Think of Gaudi, or cubism. All great poetry is a kind of enstrangement as well, it forces you think about language itself, and the meaning of words.Think about the odd, weird world of Emily Dickenson for example. Shakespeare is full of sexual references and topics which highlight social attitudes and the unspoken side of human nature etc, Midsummer night's Dream is replete with them (beastiality), as is Hamlet (incest), or Twelfth night,cross-dressing, homosexuality, incest etc. All of these are meant to shock you out of your normal view of the world, and to allow you to see it differently. This is both the skill and the value of art.

I agree with all of the above, however I draw the line at exteme plasphemy, this is a desperate attempt to garner publicity. I agree with thinking outside the box but I disagree with insulting people for the sake of it. To me it is the visual equivelant of continually adding the 'f-word' for effect in drama; a sign of weakness of the material in the first place.

The whole idea of being radical is to make people think, not to insult them. Incidentally, I know quite a few gay people who take exception to being called "Queers". People who have no talent try to use the shock route instead, and then pretend that they have a higher understanding lol. The Arts council fund enough rubbish like that. Sorry, but there is no doubt in my mind that it is rubbish.

Yes, it certainly has done that. I see him and the people who fund it as weirdos that I'd be nervous to be the company of.
 
Okay in this case I probably agree with you in some respects. I think I seen this guy in something else and found it boring and uninteresting. The blasphemy thing is interesting tho. I don't like the idea of blasphemy period. There should be no sacred cows in society and as one guy said about 3/4 hundred yrs ago, a good test of a religion is if you can laugh at it. Bear in mind Pakistan ( that haven of liberalism) praised our recent blasphemy law. It reminds me of a line from Shakespeare;" you have not half the power to do me harm as I have to be hurt." If I decide that the local oak tree represents the essence of the sacred like the germanic Wotan, surely I can use the blasphemy laws to make sure no one says anything bad about my "god"? This would border on the ridiculous. PErhaps part of this blokes "art" is to subvert the totems of Christianity?

So you've already decided it's a blasphemous piece? How can you do that from reading the below? A guy with a This post will be deleted if not edited immediately complex is inherently blasphemous?

It’s also a story that hasn’t gone away - one of Catholic guilt, crippling gay shame, living with HIV and the search for love and intimacy.
We want to bring this groundbreaking story to full production at ABSOLUT Fringe 2011, making it the most talked about theatrical event of the festival, while inspiring, challenging and exhilarating as many people as we can squeeze into the theatre!
If you joined us at Queer Notions 2010, you will know all about the mid-show power cut, the urgent evacuation from Project Arts Centre, the rousing performance on the snowy streets, and the sustained standing ovation.
You will know that Neil is one of Ireland’s most exciting artists, and one of our most incendiary performers. Somebody who consistently challenges the status quo and provides unforgettable nights out. He is a maverick. A force of nature. Operating outside of any established support structures, Neil has created history as Heidi Konnt (unforgettable winner of Alternative Miss Ireland 2006) and host of WERK in the Abbey Theatre (Sunday Times Best Night Out 2010). Oh I see. It's not at all like Benetton's 'close to the line' racial ads. of the 1990's, which were specifically designed to garner as much publicity as possible because they knew from the off that they'd be controversial? (This worked well until they started getting punitive fines)

I just don't believe that offending people for publicity represents strong Art, or even Art. Personally I just see it as pathetic, but a lot of people would be offended by this 'imagery'. I'll pass on the 'film' thanks, the image is enough for me.

Just to re-cap, mixing the two most socially contentious subjects in a visual is purely coincidence? lol Incidentally, have you noticed that all the films are sexual? I think we need to separate being Gay from perhaps a medical condition. I look forward to the next compelling story that we all need to know about urgently ... not.
