Hi,

My husband's plan
Laya Company Health is up for renewal and I can't understand the HIA website.

It is just his plan as I am covered through work. We don’t have our two children insured at the moment.

Is there any alternative CHEAPER! plans that he could avail of?

His renewal date is 01/06/2013.

We have GP cards.

I am not bothered so much about private rooms but more access to private hospitals should we need them.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Sorry he is paying 55.12 per month now. Which is about 670 per year.

they are looking at charging him 739.93 from June which is 63.52 per month.

Hi TableEnd,

There are not many plans at that level which give access to private hospitals. Most of the cheapest plans are meant for
public hospital cover only.

However there are a couple of alternative options with access to private hospitals, at cheaper prices.
Details as follows;

Laya Healthcare;
1. Essential First; adult price 582pa;
public hospital(semi-private room),
private hospital(semi-private room) - shortfall 265 or 430 per night.
cardiac surgery in Mater Private or Beacon Hospital - fully covered, no shortfall.

VHI Healthcare
2. One Plan 500; adult price 676pa
public hospital (semi-private room)
private hospital cover(semi-private room) surgery costs fully covered, excess payment of 500 charged on admission.(one payment,NOT per night)
Cardiac surgery in Beacon Hospital fully covered, 500 excess applies. (One payment, NOT per night)

Note; only cardiac surgery in certain hi-tech hospitals is covered on these plans. Your present plan includes full access to hi-tech
hospitals with a shortfall of 510 per night.

A shortfall means that the patient pays x amount per night, as the health
plan does not fully cover the cost of treatment in a private hospital.

For example, Company Health plan, which is your husband's current plan, has a
shortfall of 255euro per night for surgery in a private hospital.
An average stay in hospital for surgery, is approx 5 nights. So this would cost your husband 255 x 5 = 1275 if he had surgery in any private hospital.

A shortfall cost does not apply to any of the main A+E Hospitals, so he is fully covered in these hospitals, no extra charges apply.

Note; the One Plan 500 with VHI does not have any shortfalls.
It has an excess payment of 500, for surgery in a private hospital.
So, it would cost 500euro for surgery (5 nights) in a private hospital, cheaper than Company Health plan which would cost 1275euro.

Hope this explains things more clearly.
